What better in wintery August than come to the Mt Eden Village Centre to hear from local politicians, watch a movie, come dancing, listen to fabulous music and much more.
The Mt Eden Maungawhau Village Centre Society presents the Epsom Electorate Candidates’ Meeting. The Society warmly invites all Epsom residents to a meeting from 7-9pm Tuesday 22nd August in the Mt Eden Village Centre Church. The following candidates for the Epsom electorate: David Seymour (ACT), Paul Goldsmith (National), David Parker (Labour), Barry Coates (Green), and Julian Paul (NZ First) will speak and respond to questions from the audience.
On Saturday the 5th August, 350 Aotearoa is screening a film in the Mt Eden Village Centre Hall on climate activism to inspire people to become involved with their organisation. Come and watch as world-renowned pranktivists, “The Yes Men”, take on the biggest corporate climate criminals and learn what you too can do to help save the world.The film starts at 2pm, is 90 minutes long and will be followed by refreshments and a nice chit-chat with fun people. Doors open at 1:30pm. 350 Auckland (Aotearoa) is a volunteer network of people passionate about stopping climate change via divestment from the fossil fuel industry.
Beth from Latin Dance has a new schedule for her dance classes from the 2nd of August. She is introducing a Bachata class – one of the most popular Latin partner dances in the world. It originates from the Dominican Republic and is simple and beautiful and taught to modern remixes of pop songs as well as classic Bachata music. Beth specialises in Sensual Bachata, which is slower with more body isolation and movement. From Wednesday 2nd August her classes are as follows:
Beginners Salsa – all welcome, 6:30pm.
Open Sensual Bachata – all welcome, 7.30pm.
Intermediate / Advanced Bachata – some experience needed, 8.30pm.
We are lucky to have Village Music presenting two concerts this month. On 25th August at 8pm Village Music proudly presents Sarah Spicer and the Blue Riders in Concert. Sarah Spicer and The Blue Riders is a collective featuring NZ X Factor star performer singer/songwriter Sarah Spicer with The Blue Riders: Liam Ryan (keyboards), Buck Croyden (lap-steel and guitars), Wayne Melville (bass) and Jeff Baker (drums and percussion). Sarah delivers a deeply moving performance. Her powerful voice and soulful songs explore the road back from stardom and the inner journey to the heart. Expect atmosphere, real emotion and rare simpatico as Sarah weaves her magic with her seasoned, hand-picked band. There will be some table seating, rowed seating and as always, it will be kept convivial. Bring friends, bring family, bring your ears and BYO. Greg Johnson and special guest musicians are also playing a sold-out concert on 11th August, at 8pm in the Mt Eden Village Centre Hall. Greg, who is currently domiciled in LA, will be visiting New Zealand for a short time and is keen to air his current material to a live audience – and a VillageMusic Soirée is the perfect way to do it.
We are excited to introduce MotherFunk Babywearing Dance Classes to the Centre on Thursday mornings, 10 – 11am in the hall. MotherFunk is putting the FUNK back into motherhood! The Mt Eden Village Craft Market takes over the Centre on the second Saturday of the month – 12th August from 10.00am to 4.00pm. You will find a great range of unique and original crafts lovingly handmade in New Zealand by expert crafters.
The Mt Eden Boutique Wellbeing Market on Saturday 26 August will have skincare, massages, readings and more. In the Mt Eden Village Hall from 10.00am to 3.00pm.
At the end of the month Eden Arts prepare for their annual Young Artist Awards. The ceremony will take place on Saturday 2nd of September at 2pm with an exhibition open to view on Sunday 3rd September from 10am – 3pm. The aim of the Young Artists Awards is to provide a platform for young artists to exhibit their work, to place it in a professional gallery environment and to encourage adventurous experimentation and creativity.
