December 2024

Dear all,

With the holiday season upon us, we thank you all for your support of the Mt Eden Village Centre this year.

ANI students Lucy, Tui, Anastasia and Nishika have installed a Community Pantry/Pātaka Kai here until Friday 20 December 2024. A project developed as part of their school Community Action module, we are so honoured to host it here in the Foyer. The ethos is please take what you need and leave what you can. Hours of access are Monday to Friday 9am to 12noon (except 9 December) until Friday 20 December. Also generally accessible when we have events listed in our calendar here.

Artist Rewa Grimsdale celebrates an exhibition of her latest work Papatuanuku here on Friday 20 December from 6.00pm to 10.00pm. Now based in Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland, Rewa’s journey has included Pākiri and growing up in Maungawhau/Mt Eden. Her art reflects her health and embodies her ancestors and her subjects are the essence of life and beyond. She is of Te Ātiawa/Ngāti Toa/Ngāti Raukawa/Ngāti Tūwharetoa/Te Arawa/Ngāti Awa descent. Join Rewa for her celebration, there will be refreshments please BYO alcohol if preferred.

Join Kadampa Meditation this Saturday 7 December for the perfect December antidote – De-stress, a half day course. We all know that stressing out just makes things worse. And yet, we often feel like there is no other choice than to stress and worry about the difficulties and pressures we face in our lives. By learning how to let go of a stressed mind and cultivate a clear and peaceful one, we are able to respond to problems differently, in a more centred, flexible and effective way. More information and to book is here:

The last Mt Eden Village Craft Market of 2024 is here on Saturday 14 December from 9.30am to 3.00pm. The Market is an amazing NZ Handmade market with talented and passionate crafters you will enjoy meeting and admiring. A great place to purchase your Xmas presents, they also have a shopper incentive to win a stunning Christmas Hamper. Shop local and shop NZ Handmade to support our community. More information is here.

The Auckland Somatic Dance Collective are here on Friday 20 December at 7.00pm. Somatic dance is a guided free form movement journey deep into the layers of the body, supported by a carefully curated soundscape. The space is non judgemental. Auckland Somatic Dance are a collective of certified somatic dance facilitators and DJ’s who regularly offer dances in Auckland. Follow them on Facebook here.

Over the summer break have a think about joining the rat trappers of the Maungawhau Ecological Halo. Pop into the Village Centre Office Monday to Friday between 9.00am and 12.00noon and if you reside within the Halo area you can pick up a free rat trap and be shown how to use it. By joining Halo you are also joining a wider community making a difference for our native habitats. Shout out to all the volunteers and of course Halo Ecological Restoration Advisor Phil for bringing us all together for nature. Please always call us on 09 631 0678 or email manager@mtedenvillagecentre.co.nz to check we are open.

The Office will close for the summer break on Friday 20 December 2024 at 12.00noon and reopen on Monday 13 January 2025 at 9.00am.

Support groups AA and NA continue through the December/January period. Alcoholics Anonymous meet every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10.00am in the Lounge, and Narcotics Anonymous meet every Friday from 12.15pm in the Hall.

On behalf of the Mt Eden Methodist Church Charitable Trust we wish you a Merry Christmas and a wonderful time with friends and family.

Ngā mihi/Best wishes
