About us

Vision

The Mt Eden Village Centre is managed by the Mt Eden Methodist Church Charitable Trust, a partnership between the local community, the Methodist Church and Auckland City.

The Centre is located in the heart of Mt Eden Village in the beautifully renovated Methodist Church and Hall. Our vision is to support community participation in a broad range of activities, programmes and events. We proactively encourage involvement and participation by local people regardless of gender, age or ethnicity by being inclusive, accessible, welcoming and respectful.

About the Trust

The Mt Eden Methodist Church Charitable Trust was formed in 2008, initially to oversee the renovation of the Mt Eden Methodist Church and Hall and the construction of a service building linking the Church to the Hall, and subsequently to oversee the management of the Mt Eden Village Centre. The Trust comprises seven members drawn from the Methodist Church, the Mt Eden Maungawhau Village Centre Society representing the local community, and the Auckland Council.

History

The Church was built in 1900, to a design by architect Arthur Herbert White. It is constructed in a “timber gothic” style, with tall arched windows surrounded by timber hoods, timber towers and timber buttresses. The Sunday School Hall was built 10 years later in 1910. Various alterations to the buildings over the years have resulted in relatively minor changes in their appearance.

Interested in finding out a little bit more about our history? Helen Laurenson researched and wrote In This Familiar Place: the Mt Eden Village Methodist Church Centenary 1899-1999, which was launched at the Church’s centennial celebrations in November 1999. With many illustrations tracing the church and its people through 100 years, it also sets the story within the context of the wider community. Professor Peter Lineham of Massey University notes that ‘it is such a fine example of the genre’. A few copies are still available from Dr Helen Laurenson hlaurenson@xtra.co.nz, Price $10.00 + pp.

Generous contributions from the Auckland Council, Lottery Grants Board, both their Environment and Heritage and Community Facilities funds, the Methodist Church, the Environment Initiatives Fund of the then Auckland Regional Council, and the Mt Eden Maungawhau Village Centre Society, have allowed the Church and Hall to be renovated and linked by a new building with kitchen, bathrooms and entrance Foyer. As a result, the Mount Eden community is now proud to have a unique Centre that serves the needs of both community members and the congregation.

Sustainability

The centre has established an environmental policy outlining its commitment to minimise the environmental impact of its operation. The Centre Managers work with hirers and suppliers to ensure the premises have zero waste and these guidelines are met.
